Steps to Updating Your DNS

FIVE STEPS TO UPDATE YOUR DNS

1) Log into the Registrar where your domain name is hosted (i.e. GoDaddy, Bluehost, etc.)

2) Navigate to the domain record domain name (i.e. "Manage DNS" is what you're looking for in GoDaddy)

3) Update the following domain records:

Record Type: CNAME

Record Name: www = ________.wpengine.com

Record Type: A Record

Record Name: @ = _____________

4) Save and wait (NOTE: Remember to hit "save"; It typically will take 24 hours)

5) Repeat as needed (i.e. Multiple domain names point to your website)

The Detailed Instructions:

1. LOG INTO REGISTRAR

Once you’ve identified the domains that need to be updated you’ll need to log into your DNS Provider, or Domain Registrar’s Dashboard. You can also use the site https://www.whois.net/ to find the Nameserver or Nameserver information, which paired with your preferred search engine should assist you in logging into the correct dashboard. You can also search your email, as most DNS Providers will send a confirmation email after you’ve configured your domain with them.

If you’re having issues logging into the dashboard you should either contact their Support team or utilize their reset password / username links. At the bottom of this page you’ll find logins for some of our more common registrars.

2. NAVIGATE TO THE DOMAIN RECORD

Since not all Registrars are the same – this next step will require a bit of trial and error. After you’ve logged into your Registrar, look for a section that allows you to MANAGE your domain. You’ll know you’ve found the right place when you see your domain(s) listed out.

Some Registrars have the domain and records in the same area, such as Cloudflare:

4. UPDATE DOMAIN RECORD VALUE

Using the A Record (IP address) in your Domains page, update your domain’s A Record in your Registrar’s Dashboard. Delete the IP address in the Dashboard and copy paste the one from the Domain’s Page into the Dashboard.

5. SAVE AND WAIT

After you’ve updated the Record Value you will click Save or Update. The DNS may take several hours to days to fully propagate throughout the internet.

6. REPEAT AS NEEDED

If there’s more than one domain requiring action you will want to repeat steps 1 – 5 until all domains have been updated. By not doing so, you risk your sites going down or suffering a performance bottleneck.
